Exterior
A barrier-free exterior
is just as important as a barrier-free interior. It is essential that there is not
a substantial incline between the street and the entrance to the home. That is why
we make sure that the proposed site is suitable for an accessible home before we
build.
In most traditionally designed
homes, the main floor of the house is two to three feet above the garage floor.
In the accessible homes we build, we will often build the main floor and the garage
floor at the same level for easy travel in and out of the home. We also bring the
grade right to the front door, with no steps or long ramps. What's more, we install
a low profile threshold so there are no barriers when going in or out. If ramps
are necessary, we design them to be both functional and attractive.
